You, readers and patrons of ManBQue, have questions about grilling. And honestly, it’s one of our favorite things to do to answer them. From Chicago’s Best: Grilled Frog’s Legs

Posted on: November 15th, 2010   By: jbmays   2 Comments Share

Gig /gig/ n. a spear-like device with a long, thick handle, used for spearing fish and frogs

To gig /gig/ v. to catch or spear (a fish or frog) with a gig.

Gigging /gig’-giŋ/ ger. American Midwestern and Southern art of hunting frogs while rocking sleeveless shirts, camouflaged pants, cement boots, a trucker hat, and a pronounced lack of even a high school education.

Although these people – gigging types – may not have the most teeth in the country, they’re definitely on to something with the notion of eating frog. While swinging pointy instruments in a swamp for hours every night does sound like a party (especially if there’s Busch Light involved), some grocery stores also provide a handy supply of frog legs. Don’t worry! Frog legs aren’t slimy, slippery, or fishy; they have the consistency of chicken with a unique flavor. And no, unique doesn’t mean bad – for example, tripe has a unique taste, and that taste is crap. But frog legs are actually good, if you can get over the fact that you’re eating frog legs. Bet you don’t think twice about eating crab legs, though, and those things are creepy looking sea bugs. The best ways to eat frog legs are: deep fried or grilled. Come to think of it, that’s the best way to eat any food. But having a grill covered in tiny shapely gams is a sure (and delicious) way to grab everyone’s attention at your cookout.

Below is a recipe prepared specifically for WGN’s Chicago Best TV. Hey, if you can make a TV host try your exotic recipe and watch as he raves on camera about how good it is, you know you’re a man.

- 6 tablespoons soy sauce
- 6 tablespoons honey
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1 pinch ground ginger
- 1 pound frog legs
- Salt and pepper taste
- 3 tablespoon thinly sliced green onions
- Fresh sliced ginger root

1. Mix all ingredients excluding frog legs in glass bowl. Reverse ¼ marinade to drizzle on frog legs after grilling.

2. Combine marinade and frog legs in plastic bag. Marinade frog legs for at least 2 hours in refrigerator.

3. Grill for 3 minutes a side over direct heat. TIP: Put aluminum foil on grill because legs are delicate and stick to grate.

4. Remove legs from grill and drizzle reserve soy/ honey mixture over them.d
