Great food, good music, somewhat ok [...]

You, readers and patrons of ManBQue, have questions about grilling. And honestly, it’s one of our favorite things to do to answer them. Especially because they’re often along the lines of “Can you grill X?” At one of the last events, a newer attendee was marveling at the variety of food, legitimately believing that the [...]

It’s that time again when the Manbque guys partner up with the Hopcast and Small Bar crew and create another perfect burger and beer pairing!

Burgers/Beers this month:

1. The Ponce De Leon, infused with chocolate mole and smokey hot sauce, then topped with queso fresco and avocado sour cream; this burger smacks your face with flavor. The Ponce De Leon is perfectly pairied with the Goose Island ESB

2. The Stoner: This burger is a flashback to your college dorm, bong days. Filled with smoked gruyere cheese (yeah, SMOKED gruyere), easy jalapeno and topped with bacon peanut butter on a croissant. This is THE cure for your “munchies.” It’s only fitting that The Stoner burger is paired with the Stone Smoked Porter.

Summer Brews for YOU!

Posted on: June 30th, 2010   By: The Godfather   1 Comment Share

When you’re from Chicago, the summer is something to be celebrated.
There are beers that are summer seasonals, and beers that are year
round which are great during this time. Between all the festivals and
Man B Ques, beer selection is crucial to a good time. Generally “lawnmower”
beers are at their prime during these sunnier months but don’t let that
stop you from picking a choice brew.

The summer is the time for light refreshing beers usually in the form of
pilseners, witbiers, and kolschs. Among these styles you will also find brews
with fruit adjuncts, giving your old lady a chance to finally appreciate beer.

My Summer Picks:

Half Acre Daisy Cutter
If you like hoppy beer you’ll find a unique flavor balance in this
ale. Although this beer is not classified as an IPA, its damn near
close to it. Pours a little hazy with orange/straw color with nice
foamy white head. Fairly strong grassy aroma with a dash of funk,
finishes crisp and somewhat dry. The perfect beer for the end of
a hard day.

Bell’s Oberon -
You cannot deny this good ol’ midwest standby. Classified as a
American wheat ale, this beer is a golden orange color with
a fair amount of haze. A little spicy, citrus tones, a light bodied
super smooth, and super easy beer to drink.

Goose Island Fleur
My friends are sick of me talking about this beer. Ever since I had a
glass of this last year I’ve been anticipating its next release.
What sets this belgian ale apart from the rest is the use of hibiscus
flowers and kombucha tea. Pours an interesting rose color releasing
a berry/fruit aroma which begins slightly and finishes tart. Don’t
let this one sneak up on you, with 7% ABV you’ll be doing shaky face
photos in no time.

-The Beer Ape

Don’t forget to check out the beers our East Coast friends at Beer Nation recommend:

1. Southern Tier Hop Sun
A tribute to the dynamic energy of the summer. Brewed with 2-row pale malt, wheat malt. Hopped with Centennial, dry-hopped with more of the same.

2. Tröegs Sunshine Pils
Crisp and refreshing with just enough hops to make it something special. Spicy noble hops blend nicely with just the right amount of lager taste to create a balanced and refreshing beer.

3. Dogfish Head Festina Peche
A refreshing neo-Berliner Weisse fermented with peaches.

NOW GO OUT AND DRINK!!!

(Re)Introduction to Destruction: Five Songs, Metal as Fuck

Posted on: May 28th, 2010   By: The Godfather   No Comments Share

It has been suggested that perhaps I offered a low-key introduction of myself as music writer on the Manliest Blog Of Them All. I stand by my love of Buena Vista, yet here, as a sort of reintroduction, is a collection of videos from 5 of the metalest bands I have seen. Metal and I have a long, long history. My first concert was a Cannibal Corpse show Junior year of high school, and if I get in a room quiet enough, I’m fairly certain I can still hear the amp ringing. That’s how you know the metal is in your head. Here are 5 kickass videos from those days, before rap-rock and tribal tats made society collectively douchier.

Black Sabbath – “War Pigs”

Believe it or not, Ozzy Osbourne was not always a shambling joke of a man. Or if he was, at least he had the foresight not to wave that shit around in public. I saw the original Black Sabbath lineup a mere handful of months before Ozzy stopped being Ozzy Osbourne and started being That Hilarious Mumbling Guy With The Shrew Wife. I sort of wish I could forget everything from Ozzy after 1998. “War Pigs” is still sweet, though.

The Haunted – “Bury Your Dead”

I swear, this band was sent down from Central Casting. They’re exactly – EXACTLY – what you think of when you think of European metal. They’ve still got the melodic guitars, but they scream like everyone in every metal band was legally required to do at the turn of the century. Imagine going to your first concert, and seeing the first opening band, and the bald, glowering singer comes up and says, in a heavy Swedish accent: “This is from our album, ‘The Haunted Made Me Do it.’ It’s called Bury. Your. Dead.” If you wrote that scene in a movie about metal, people would think it was lazy and unoriginal. It’s pretty much exactly what The Haunted does every night.

Tool – “Parabola”

Oh for the days when children could still be traumatized by something on basic cable. Growing up, Tool’s early videos did just that. Now MTV is all horrible shows about people from New Jersey. Where’s the metal, you bastards?

Meshuggah – “New Millenium Cyanide Christ”

Yes it sounds like the song title was made on a Norweigan metal magnetic poetry set, but the timing in this song is unreal. The clear lack of a budget in this video makes them look slightly ridiculous, but rest assured, they will fuck your world up.

Hatebreed – “Last Breath”

Short and sweet. When you bought a Hatebreed album, you were lucky if it went past 30 minutes. I imagine it would be hard to produce this kind of aggression over a double album.

Okay, so we’ve covered Cuban music and screaming, fiery heavy metal. Next up: Everything else.
